Apollinaire (born Wilhelm Albert Vladimir Apollinaris Kostrowitzky in Rome 1880) changed his name on coming to live in Paris where he became very popular in the artistic circles of Montparnasse, which included his friends Picasso and Jean Cocteau. He coined the word Surrealism and wrote symbolist poetry and litersry and artistic criticism. He was wounded in the the first world war and photographs of him in uniform with a bandaged head exist, from which Manfredi made this fanciful portrait |
