French, 1914 - 1955de Stael was born into an aristocratic family in St Petersburg, Russia . After the revolution the family fled to Poland and Nicolas was sent to Brussels to study art. After years of travelling in Europe and Africa he eventually settled in Paris in 1938. During the war he fought in the French Foreign Legion, returning to Paris to become a painter and a leading exponent of the School of Paris painters. He also had a small but important output of prints. |
