British, 1903 - 1980 Graham Sutherland was born in London. He was educated at Epsom College, Surrey. He worked as an engineer at the Midland Railway Works at Derby before studying engraving at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His eaerly work was in landscapes and he produced some superb landscape etchings. He also took up glass design, fabric design and poster design during the 1930s, and taught at a number of London art colleges. After World War II his painting involved transforming natural shapes into highly stylized abstract forms. Having converted to Catholicism in 1926 he produced several relgious paintings. Having abandoned etching his printed work was entirely in colour lithography |
